[identity profile] mrs-jack-turner.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] m_j_t_fiction
Since I seem to be making a bunch of rec posts on my journal for Avengers fics, I decided that I should put them all in one place. So, here's a rec list for people to look at if they are getting into the fandom or just want to see what there is out there that they may have missed as well as give me the chance to showcase the fics in fandom that I love. These recs are likely to have a mixture of canon and can be either movie!verse or from comic canon. If you don't know anything about the comic canon, I suggest having a quick look here (which is currently illustrated with pics of Cap's ass everywhere :P) as it will give you some basics that will help when reading fics set in one of those universes.

Most of the fics I post here are likely to be Steve/Tony (superhusbands) Clint/Phil (shieldhusbands) stories, since that's what I tend to read the most. However, if I come across a fic that I like that isn't that pairing it'll certainly end up here as well. I will be updating this as I read more in fandom, and anything that I add after this stage will be dated so that people can tell what's new to the list.

Everything is listed alphabetically by author and not by preference, as there is no way I could manage to put these in order.  However, things that I really do love will have stars by it.

If anyone notices that I've linked something wrong, please let me know. There's a lot in here, and I could have made a mistake.

Steve/Tony (superhusbands)

The Twice-Told Tale by arysteia.
Summary: For someone he'd hero-worshipped for so long, Steve Rogers in the flesh is a pretty big disappointment. For one thing, he keeps looking at Tony as though he reminds him of someone else, and even if he never says anything, Tony's pretty sure it's his father. A lifetime of not measuring up to Howard's expectations is more than enough, thank you very much, and he's certainly not going to make an effort to live up to any of Steve's. Steve's pretty clearly failed to live up to his expectations, in any case, and that's not hypocritical at all.
Why you should read it: Time travel and the Avengers. Two of my favourite things :D

Metal Heart by ashinan.
Summary: No one has ever asked Tony Stark if he was fine.
Why you should read it: Arc reactor angst done so well. It's nice to see Tony not being ok with something. (Added 14/07/12)

Semaphore by DevilDoll.
Summary: "I’m trying to like you, Tony. You’re just making it very hard."
Why you should read this: If you want to see how they could go from how they are in the movies to getting together, then this is the fic for you. It's my favourite on of that type.

Bulletproof by foxxcub. (See also, Launch Your Assault)
Summary: At age fifteen, Steve Rogers had been in love with Tony Stark.
By age twenty, he’d (mostly) gotten over it. And then he promptly became Tony Stark's fuck buddy. (also Phil/Clint)
Why you should read it: It's all about the boys being rather oblivious of each other's feelings whilst in a college setting and I'm rather fond of fics where you get to be frustrated at the characters for not being able to see what's right in front of them. Movie AU.

Buy You a Mockingbird by jadedoll.
Summary: Babyfic! When Tony unexpectedly becomes a parent, his world view drastically changes. And changes. Then it changes again. And then again.
Why you should read it: Tony learning to become a father is beautiful and the fact both he and Steve have to come to terms with being fathers completely unexpectedly is really sweet to watch because not only do they have the baby to look after, but they have to work out just what they mean to each other. I won't lie, this fic is absolutely heartbreaking in places, but it's worth it. Not M-Preg for those of you who are wondering. Comic AU.

***The Last Love Song of Anthony E. Stark by jibrailis.***
Summary: After contracting an Asgardian virus, Tony starts forgetting things. And people. And Steve.
Why you should read it: Tony losing his mind and memory has to be one of the worst things that could ever happen to him, and reading it happen is so horrible, but this fic is so wonderful and one of the best fics I've ever read. So if you can handle the subject matter, it's a must read.

Safeword by melannen.
Summary: Tony Stark doesn't need to be safe, sane, and consensual. He has JARVIS instead. (Then he gets Steve.)
Why you should read it: I always love Tony having close relationships with his bots and JARVIS and this one does it on a level that I haven't come across before in Tony/Steve fic.

Tony is a suit porn guy and Steve loves it (hell yes) by [livejournal.com profile] nerak_rose.
Summary: In which there are far too many parentheses, no dialogue, and Steve takes kinks very seriously.
Why you should read it: Because Tony Stark/RDJ is suit porn in person form. Yes he is. I gladly take all the blame for this being written because it's hot and funny and I love it :D

***In Which Tony Stark Builds Himself Some Friends (But His Family Was Assigned by Nick Fury) series by scifigrl47*** (also referred to as "The Toasterverse").
Summary (of first fic in the series): Steve takes things like personal responsibility and respect seriously. Tony's got people he pays to take care of that kind of thing, and anyway, he's pretty sure that he's going to die of some exotic disease in his workshop, because Dummy's still a little spotty about what is 'clean' enough to put on an open wound. The rest of the Avengers are in this for personal gain, except for Clint, he just enjoys being a dick.
And some things shouldn't be a chore. (also Phil/Clint)
Why you should read it: It's a really fun series and involves a lot of Tony not always doing the right thing and general Avengers all living together fun.  The latest part of the series is still fun, but compared to the first pieces a lot darker. Either way all three fics are an amazing read.

***Phil Coulson's Case Files of the Toasterverse series by scifigrl47*** (See also, In Which Tony Stark Builds Himself Some Friends (But His Family Was Assigned by Nick Fury))
Summary (of first fic in the series): From the Avengers Case Files of Phil Coulson: Grocery shopping is necessary, Tony's a little too proud of his tech, Captain America's lost on the streets of New York, and sometimes social injustice just happens.
Phil Coulson's the one who's got to write this nonsense up, and he is not their PR Manager. (also Phil/Clint)
Why you should read it: It's the cracky spin off part of the Toasterverse that will make you laugh so much and will really cheer you up no matter your mood.

***The Act of Creation Will Be Your Salvation by scifigrl47***
Summary: When Tony Stark was seventeen years old, he built his first AI. On that day, he ceased to be his father's creation, and became a creating force in his own right.
That one act likely saved his life, and not always in the most obvious ways.

Why you should read it: It is perfection in fic form. It deals with Tony creating Dummy (DUM-E) and Jarvis (JARVIS) and not only his feelings on the matter, but a lot into the inner workings of the "mind" DUM-E as well. Now as we all know it's not uncommon to be moved by fanfiction, if we didn't enjoy reading it and have some sort of emotional response towards the characters then there wouldn't be much of a point in doing so, but this goes beyond that. This fic not only manages to get you completely feeling for Tony (there's a lot of sadness in there as it does follow the plot for both Iron Man, Iron Man 2 and Avengers and let's face it Tony Stark is a tragic character when you take the time to think about him), but also can move you to tears over the feelings of an AI portrayed in canon as little more than a robotic arm.

***Will of Iron, Heart of Glass by sororexitium***
Summary:
Tony has been held by Stane since his escape from Afghani terrorists, marked dead in the eyes of the world while Stane is free to use his mind, inventions, and company as he sees fit. Tony feels there's nothing he can do and has resigned himself to death to save those he loves. That would be when JARVIS lets Captain America stumble into his old lab.
Steve has been wandering Avengers Mansion in the steps of a ghost, seeing empty spaces, and recurring oddities that mean nothing to anyone but him. He doesn't know who left them, or why the ghost lingers. It isn't even until he enters a dusty lab that things start to fall into place as he meets Anthony, a computer program named for its creator Anthony Stark.
Why you should read it: It will break your heart, but it's so worth it. A movie-based AU looking at how things could have been different if Tony had not returned from Afghanistan and has Steve and Tony managing to fall in love without meeting in person.

How to Excel at Supervillainy (and lose your heart to America) by Zekkass.
Summary: And that's how Tony's supervillainy hobby got way way way complicated.
Why you should read it: Supervillain Tony is an amazing thing and this fic is done really well and is completely in character. (Added 14/07/12)

Phil/Clint (shieldhusbands)

Summary: Clint's a hawk during the day, and Phil's a wolf by night. There's a curse, a couple of misunderstandings, and a lot of fond note-leaving involved.
Or: Magic sucks.
Why you should read it: I think I got really attached to this fic because Charmed did a take on this back in the day as well. However, I really liked how this version played out and how the relationship between Phil and Clint grew.  (Added 27/08/12)

Launch Your Assault by foxxcub. (See also, Bulletproof)
Summary: Phil Coulson was more than halfway through his six year plan, and everything was chugging along nicely.
Unfortunately, he hadn’t foreseen a cocky junior Art major waltzing into his life, or his floor.
Why you should read it: In a similar fashion to Bulletproof (it being the companion piece after all) it's all about the boys not communicating as well as they could in a college setting only with more sex, less history and more arguments. Movie AU.

Dyslexia 'Verse by hoosierbitch.
Summary (of first fic in series): The first time the teachers send a note home with Clint, about his problems, about how he’s dumber than the other kids, his dad’s not angry. He just laughs, which, Clint realizes, isn’t actually better.
Why you should read it: Because it's beautiful and heartbreaking and handled really well. (Added 27/08/12)

Summary: People who don't know Phil very well often can't imagine him at all as a pet owner.
Why you should read it: Pure fluffy, fluff that's just perfect if you're feeling down. (Added 27/08/12)

i know this much is true by kellifer_fic.
Summary: So, having Clint Barton be his fake boyfriend to get his family off his back seemed like a good... no, scratch that. It NEVER seemed like a good idea, which is why Phil's a little astounded to find himself going along with it anyway.
Why you should read it: Clint takes it on himself to be Phil's fake boyfriend when Phil goes to see his family and of course wins everyone over. It's really sweet and although doesn't go that smoothly. (Added 14/07/12)

Summary: The first words Clint ever remembers Coulson saying to him are "talk to me."
Why you should read it: One of my ultimate Phil as Clint's handler and them on SHIELD missions pre-Avengers fics. It builds their relationship really nicely. (Added 27/08/12)

Five tattoos Phil Coulson had before he met Clint Barton (and one he got after) by madness_and_smiles.
Summary: Phil had five tattoos before Clint Barton entered into his life, and then he got another one after.
Why you should read it: It's funny and sweet and is now as canon in my head as the fact that Phil Coulson lives. Because he's alive. No matter what the film people may say. (Added 22/06/12)

Tumblr Crushes by marchingjaybird.
Summary: Phil uses the Internet as stress relief. So naturally, it turns on him and introduces romance into his life.
Why you should read it: Phil Coulson has a tumblr. Need I say more? (Added 14/07/12)

Phil Coulson, Office Heartthrob by noelia_g.
Summary: Every office has a 'cute guy from Marketing with a great ass' that everyone wants to sleep with. Among the junior agents at SHIELD, that person is Phil Coulson. Clint would find it hilarious, but he just wants people to stop throwing themselves at his boyfriend.
Why you should read it: Phil gets hit on by everyone and is completely oblivious. Clint isn't as unaffected, but since no one knows they are together can't do anything about it. (Added 22/06/12)

Summary (of first fic in series): In the middle of the desert, in the middle of the night, everything changes.
Why you should read it: This really is one of my favourite fics. The main fic of the series Valhalla Blues is just beautiful and although it isn't a fix-it fic (which I would normally prefer to see because I like Phil alive thank you very much) it does have a happy ending and it is wonderful. (Added 27/08/12)

Summary: “It's a contingency plan in case of accidental teenagering,” says Stark.
Why you should read it: I'm normally not a big fan of deageing fics, but this one was done really well and I loved the fact that as teenagers Clint and Phil had the chance to do things differently than how they would have as adults. (Added 27/08/12)

Summary: Given the circumstances, it’s not terribly surprising that Clint drops the coffee mug he’s been using to water the houseplants and jumps a foot backwards in sheer astonishment.
Why you should read it: A fix-it that doesn't just simply wave away Phil's "death" easily, but actually makes them wor to get him back.  (Added 27/08/12)

(also Tony/Steve)

(also Tony/Steve)
Why you should read it: It's the cracky spin off part of the Toasterverse that will make you laugh so much and will really cheer you up no matter your mood.

The Gift of Idunn by shell.
Summary: "This is a great boon," Thor said reverently as he picked up the sphere, which remained a dull silver color. "It is for the restoration of what is lost, for the righting of wrongs. It was a gift from the goddess Idunn."
Why you should read it: A movie fix-it fic which takes a very different route to fix things than other ones I've seen.  I don't want to give things away on how it's different, but it's very sweet, if a little sad in places too. (Added 14/07/12)

Leaving Doubt to Fate by Sinope.
tumblr visitor stats
Summary: Clint doesn't have a functioning arm. Phil doesn't have a functioning body. They make it work.
Rejected titles for this story: "Ghost in the Machine," "How Clint Barton Got His Groove Back," "Phil Coulson Likes to Watch," "freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose."
Why you should read it: I see this as the Phil/Clint version of the Will of Iron, Heart of Glass series only it's a fix-it fic at the same time, well not completely fix-it, but still better than how the film ended.  (Added 14/07/12)

Bicycle made for two by sirona.
Summary: Pretending to be Phil Coulson's husband, when all you want in the world is not to have to pretend, is the single worst experience of Clint's life.
Why you should read it: I seem to really be getting into "they have to be in a relationship for the job" fics and this one just messes with feelings even more because they have to be married and poor Clint wishes that it wasn't fake. (Added 14/07/12)

Now We've Learned To Kiss The Sky by torakowalski.
Summary: “I’m going to ask you something,” Phil says and then pauses and doesn’t ask Clint anything at all.
“Yeah?” Clint asks, leaning forward and resting his elbows on the table. “Is it kinky?” It isn’t, obviously; Phil never has a problem suggesting anything when it comes to sex.
Phil shakes his head. He looks up, catching and holding Clint’s eyes. Clint doesn’t make any more smartass comments. “Marry me?” Phil asks.
Why you should read it: Because Clint and Phil getting married is the best thing ever and should always happen. (Added 14/07/12)

Gen (or Karen's section...)

Agent Sitwell: BNF by nerakrose. (background Clint/Phil)
Summary: Jasper Sitwell is the BNF in the Clint/Phil fandom.
Why you should read it: Because Sitwell needs more love.  Because the idea of him writing fic is awesome.  Because Sitwell, Natasha and I wonder who (well I know who :P) being BNFs in the Avengers fandom should always be canon.  (Added 27/08/12)

Burning Bridges by nerakrose. (background Clint/Phil)
Summary: "What do you think about working for SHIELD?" Clint asked conversationally, all the while firing a netting arrow at Natasha Romanoff. "You could be my secretary. Polish my arrows."
Why you should read it: This is about Clint bringing Natasha in and their relationship as assassin bros, which is always awesome :)  (Added 14/07/12)

This is by no means a complete list of fics out there that I like. I've probably forgotten something down the line (if anyone sees anything obvious they think I've missed off, just let me know) and if anyone wants to rec me a fic, please feel free to comment and I'll read it :)

I hope that someone out there finds this useful.
